John Herndon Mercer may very well be the best songwriter of standard songbook tunes. Even the greatest songwriters tend to think of him in another league, as in: "Yeah, I'm a good writer, but I'm no Johnny Mercer" His tunes have a richness and emotional complexity that is simply amazing.
His long list of songs include Moon River, Autumn Leaves and One for my Baby. Charlene and I will look into his personal life, which was complicated, and perform some of his many great tunes.

The songs of WWII focused more on romance and strength instead of propaganda and patriotism. The most popular songs were the cries of yearning for the day when the endless war would finally end and loved ones would be reunited. The songs promised that “We’ll Meet Again”, and “I’ll Be Seeing You.” The other main music during the war was, of course, swing and big band (such as Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey).
Michael Suser (piano) and Charlene Cochran (vocals) will talk about the great songs of the war years, and then perform them for you.

From the beginning, however, Rodgers and Hart were opposites in temperament and had a dysfunctional relationship that we will explore.
Michael Suser and Charlene Cochran will preview the background of these two greats, and then perform some of their best tunes.

With the coming of Rock and Roll in the '50's, the great days of Gershwin, Cole Porter and others were fast coming to an end. The 1960's produced an explosion of new music by Bob Dylan and the Beatles, to name of few, but were any of these tunes destined to become a part of the Songbook?
A closer look at 60's reveals that awesome tunes were still being written. We'll take a look a the songs of Bert Bachrach, Motown, Henry Mancini and Antonio Carlos Jobim (bossa nova). Michael Suser will give a brief history of the composers, followed by a performance of some of the best tunes by vocalist Charlene Cochran, accompanied by Michael on keyboard.
